A Cup of Sins is a new CD release of  works by Iranian-Canadian composer Parisa Sabet.  If there’s a unifying theme it’s religious/cultural persecution in Iran and there’s a strong Bahai influence.  The six pieces are scored for various combinations of voice, piano and small ensemble and add up to about an hour of very rewarding music. The first piece, Shurangiz, is a riff on music for the tar (a kind of Iranian lute) and it’s scored for flute, clarinet, piano, violin and cello.  It’s an interesting combination of traditional Iranian influences with a nod to Western minimalism.  It’s quite meditative in mood. All these pieces are brilliantly performed by Christina Petrowska-Quilico (piano), Peter Stoll (clarinet), Robert Grieve (electric guitar), Matthias McIntire (violin/viola), Dobrochna Zubek (cello) and Laurel Swinden (flute).  Jacqueline Woodley is the vocalist throughout and does a really fine job of coping with some extremely varied and demanding vocal writing.  Joshua Tamayo conducts the ensemble works. The recording was made in the Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto in December last year and is clear and balanced. Catalogue number: Redshift Records TK478 Operramblings
Recorded at the Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto Producer: Denise Ball

Rivers by Ann Southam at the Big Lake Festival

August 13th; 7:00pm - Big Lake Festival

Cold Creek Vineyards, Prince Edward County K0K 2J0

RIVERS: Celebrating Ann Southam at the Big Lake Festival     Ann Southam is celebrated as one of Canada’s first prominent and recognized female composers in the 1960’s a time that composition was dominated by men – paving the beginning of a path for women composers. A proud feminist and nature lover, she incorporated her passion in her music, and in her own words her works “reflect the nature of traditional women’s work – repetitive, life-sustaining, requiring time and patience”. RIVERS is a large collection of pieces that represents all the tempi of flowing  water. Christina Petrowska Quilico worked closely on these pieces with Ann Southam over decades, forming a very close friendship that lasted for 30 years.   Adults $47.00 + $2.38 booking fee  Seniors & Students $42.00 + $2.24 booking fee
